On October 18, 2007, one of the most tragic events of our city hit home
for so many of us. Our friend, Debbie Kornegay, was murdered at the hand of the very person she was trying to help. In this event Debbie's life became a living parable, not unlike the many parables found in the pages of the Holy Scriptures.
Like the timeless story of the Good Samaritan in the Gospel of St. Luke, Debbie did not let the risk of helping keep her from doing so and Debbie's friends, neighbors, family and fellow church members have made a commitment that the witness of her life not come to an end but rather continue to grow and flourish.
To this end many persons have come together to establish Debbie's Fund. The proceeds from Debbie's Fund will go to assist with the organizations and causes for which Debbie was passionate: feeding and sheltering the homeless, arts and
education, assisting those who continue to assist others in need, and more. The organizations that will benefit from Debbie's fund will be in the city of Rocky Mount and on Ocracoke Island, a special place for Debbie.
If you did not know Debbie Kornegay, you missed a real treat. A trained social worker, she was certainly true to her calling...a loving community servant who just happened to be a highly respected potter, a budding painter, and a gourmet cook.
The fund will be administered by the Stewardship Trust of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Rocky Mount, NC, Debbie's church home, and the distribution committee for the fund will include non-Good Shepherd members from the wider community. All gifts to Debbie's Fund are fully tax-exempt and will be acknowledged to Debbie's family.
Please hep us carry on the spirit of our friend and God's beloved servant by making a donation to Debbie's Fund.
