A Packing Event with Stop Hunger Now (SHN) will be held in the Day School Parish Hall.  We will pack meals that will go to Haiti.  Stop Hunger now has become one of the most vital relief organizations in the world for eliminating hunger.  This is an inter-generational Event.  So kids, teenagers, adults are encouraged to help us pack meals to eliminate hunger.  Right now SHN is working hard to assist in Haiti. This event will be held on the same day of the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast.  Come and have breakfast first!  SHN was able to immediately respond in Haiti with food and within a day was feeding 50,000 people per day.  Here are some statistics on hunger that are eye-opening:

  • There are more than 1 billion hungry people in our world today. This is an increase of about 100 million in the past year.
  • One out of six people in the developing world suffers from hunger.
  • Nearly two-thirds of the world’s hungry live in only 7 countries.
  • Under-nutrition is associated with more than half of all childhood deaths.
  • Every six seconds a child dies due to hunger.
  • More than 25,000 people die of hunger-related causes every day.
  • More people die each year from hunger-related causes than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.
  • Between 5 and 6 million children die each year from infections that would not have killed them had they been properly fed.
  • The industrialized world, including the United States, makes up less than 6 percent of the world’s hungry.
  • Approximately 684,000 children’s lives would be saved by increasing access to vitamin A and zinc.
  • There is enough food in the world to feed everyone 4.3 pounds of food every day.
  • The world has produced enough food to feed itself since the 1960s.
  • Hunger has increased significantly though the world has grown richer and produced more food than ever in the last decade.
