Ministry with Our Companion Diocese
The Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina has a companion diocese relationship with the Episcopal Church in Costa Rica. There are now two seperate mission trips to Costa Rica from Good Shepherd.
Youth Mission Trip
In 2006 we held our first youth mission trip to San Jose, Costa Rica. There a large group of our teenagers helped to restore the parish house of the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd in San Jose where there is a developing ministry of teaching English to local children and adults seeking to expand their experience and opportunity for employment. In 2008 our second youth mission trip traveled to Limon, Costa Rica for relationship building with the youth of the Episcopal Diocese of Costa Rica and to help creating a "youth room" at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Stephanie Allen oversees our youth mission trips. Please contact Stephanie with your interest and questions. She would love to hear from you.
Adult Medical & Construction Mission Trip
In 2006 we held our first adult mission trip which was part medical mission and part construction mission. Our medical team of doctors, nurses, pediatricians and pharmacy assistants saw over 600 patients during our time there. Assisted by the international mission known as "Christ for The City," our team provided everything from basic to advanced medical care for hundreds who have no medical care at all. At the same time our construction team worked to build a "Vestry Room" onto the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Limon, Costa Rica. The room is now being used for the vestry and a whole host of parish functions. Our second Adult medical and construction mission is planned for March of 2009. You are welcome.
The Rev. Louise Anderson, Deacon, coordinates our mission trips to Costa Rica. Please contact Louise with any questions or most especially with your interest to be involved.
Local Mission
Each summer our teenagers, 6th grade to 12th grade join in the local mission project known as GateKeepers. GateKeepers was begun by Lakeside Baptist Church and they now include congregations from all over the city. For a one week period some 150 teenagers and adult helpers come together to work assist Rocky Mount residents with general home repairs, community building upgrades and more to make our local citizens lives just one step better. GateKeepers happens each July and the Rev. Stephanie Allen coordinates this local mission "trip."
